Dear Ghost Enthusiast,

In the heart of the Philippines, tucked within the rugged mountains of Sagada, an extraordinary sight awaits the intrepid adventurer. Here, the cliffsides tell a tale not of rock and earth but of coffins hanging eerily high above the ground. Yes, you read it right. Coffins.

This tradition of the indigenous Igorot tribe dates back centuries. Instead of burying their dead in the ground, they carefully carve coffins out of solid wood and hoist them up onto the side of cliffs. The deceased are laid to rest inside, their final resting place in the lofty heights of the mountainside.

But why do they do it? For the Igorot, it's about being closer to their ancestral spirits, the sky being a sacred space that brings them nearer to the afterlife. It's believed that this unique burial practice blesses the soul of the departed, safeguarding their journey to the great beyond.

Visitors to these cliffs often report a sense of profound peace, an almost supernatural calm that descends upon them. But there are also tales of ethereal whispers carried on the mountain winds, of faint echoes of ancient rituals, and a sense that the air itself holds centuries of stories.

Though the practice has dwindled in recent years, the hanging coffins of Sagada remain a fascinating testament to the Igorot's unique relationship with death. They remind us that even in our final journey, there's room for extraordinary adventures.
