Dear Ghost Enthusiast,
Bonjour from below the bustling streets of Paris! Swap the romance for the macabre and take a plunge into the eerie silence of the city’s legendary Catacombs. It's where history has a heartbeat... or perhaps a ghostly pulse.
This subterranean skull-and-bone library stretches over 200 miles, but only a small segment is open to the public. Still, that's ample space for some of the most chilling ghostly encounters you could ever imagine.
The Catacombs of Paris, these endless walls of human remains, became an underground burial place in the late 18th century. It's said that over six million souls find their eternal rest here, making it a hotspot for supernatural aficionados and, possibly, the spirits themselves.
Visitors have reported all sorts of eerie experiences: unexplained lights, touches by unseen hands, and the sensation of being followed. Some even hear whispers from the dark corners, where the only living thing should be their own echoing footsteps.
Among the legions of anonymous bones, the most haunting tale is that of Philibert Aspairt, a doorkeeper of the Val-de-Grâce hospital, who got lost in the catacombs in 1793. His body wasn’t found until 11 years later, and now his spirit is said to roam the damp corridors, perhaps still trying to find his way out.
If you dare to descend into this empire of the dead, be prepared for the chilling quiet, but listen closely. The Catacombs hold Paris's deepest secrets, and the ghosts are eager to share them with those who walk their dark, dusty paths.
