Dear Ghost Enthusiast,

Nestled between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon, Poveglia Island might look picturesque from a distance, but it holds secrets that'd make your spine tingle. Over the centuries, this tiny island has served many purposes, but peace and relaxation were rarely among them.

In the 14th century, when the bubonic plague swept through Europe, Poveglia became a quarantine station. The sick were brought to the island, and many never left. The soil itself is said to be composed of 50% human ash due to the sheer number of plague victims who were cremated there.

As if that weren’t chilling enough, in the 20th century, the island housed a mental asylum. Legend has it that a cruel doctor conducted twisted experiments on the patients, with many tales suggesting that the doctor met a grisly end at the hands of tormented spirits.

Today, Poveglia remains uninhabited. Its ashen shores and decaying buildings are off-limits to tourists. Those who have managed to set foot on its soil speak of an oppressive atmosphere, disembodied whispers, and chilling encounters. Some even report hearing the ghostly screams of plague victims and the asylum's anguished souls.

While it might not be on your Italian vacation itinerary, Poveglia Island's haunting history makes it an irresistible tale for ghost enthusiasts.
