Dear Ghost Enthusiast,
In the sunny paradise of Key West, Florida, an old Victorian mansion holds a dark secret. Within its walls resides Robert the Doll, a child-sized figure that has frightened residents and visitors for over a century.
Robert belonged to a boy named Robert Eugene Otto, known as Gene. In 1904, Gene received the doll from a Bahamian servant skilled in voodoo. At first, Robert seemed like any other toy. Soon, though, strange events began to unfold.
Gene’s parents often heard him talking to Robert. This alone might not have been strange, but they also heard a deep, eerie voice answering back. Neighbors reported seeing Robert move from window to window when the family was away. Gene would wake up screaming, his room in disarray, and always blame the doll. "Robert did it," he would say.
After Gene's death in 1974, the new owners of the Otto home experienced the doll's strange behavior. Muffled giggles, the sound of footsteps in the attic, and a palpable sense of being watched plagued them. Finally, Robert found a permanent home at the Fort East Martello Museum.
Visitors to the museum often feel uneasy around Robert. Cameras malfunction, and electronic devices go haywire in his presence. The doll, seated in a glass case, seems to follow you with his gaze. Those who dare to take his photo without asking permission claim to suffer misfortunes later.
The museum receives letters daily from people begging Robert for forgiveness. These letters, often filled with tales of car accidents, job losses, and broken relationships, are believed to be the result of Robert’s curse.
