Dear Ghost Enthusiast,
Established in 1827 as the Genesee County Poor House, Rolling Hills was originally a refuge for the destitute, the disabled, widows, orphans, and the mentally ill. Over the years, it transformed from a poor house to an asylum, which housed a diverse mix of residents, some of whom spent their entire lives within its walls.
Today, Rolling Hills Asylum is infamous among paranormal enthusiasts for its high level of supernatural activity. It is said that some residents, both staff and the sheltered, never left—even after death. Visitors report a wide range of unsettling experiences: sudden drops in temperature, disembodied voices pleading or crying in the night, and shadowy figures that appear and disappear before your eyes.
One of the most famous ghostly residents is Roy, a gentle giant who stood 7 feet tall. His imposing shadow often startles visitors, yet his demeanor in life was said to be quite shy. Roy, along with other spirits like Nurse Emma, who tends to linger in the former infirmary wing, are just a few of the asylum's permanent echoes.
Whether it’s the creak of an old wheelchair or the eerie sound of footsteps following you in empty halls, Rolling Hills offers a palpable encounter with the supernatural. Ghost tours and overnight stays provide the daring with an opportunity to meet the former inhabitants face-to-face—or spirit-to-spirit.
