Dear Ghost Enthusiast,
Jewels and gemstones have long been subjects of legend and lore, their mesmerizing beauty often intertwined with tales of curses. One such tale swirls around a seemingly harmless stone, the Delhi Purple Sapphire. Don't let the name fool you, though; it's not a sapphire but an alluring amethyst with a chilling reputation.
This gem's infamous journey began in India, where it was supposedly plucked from the Temple of Indra in Delhi during the 1857 Indian Rebellion. From then on, the amethyst seemed to carry a dark cloud, bringing misfortune and distress to those who possessed it.
From failed careers to financial ruin, health issues to untimely deaths, the amethyst's owners seemed to suffer greatly. Edward Heron-Allen, a renowned scientist and writer, even claimed the cursed gem brought him "three years of infernal bad luck."
To end the curse, Heron-Allen supposedly locked the stone in a box filled with protective charms and threw it into a canal. However, the amethyst was found and returned, continuing its reign of misfortune.
Eventually, Heron-Allen decided the best way to keep the curse at bay was to donate the stone to a museum, with the strict instruction that it should not be touched until three years after his death. The stone now resides safely behind glass at London's Natural History Museum.
The Delhi Purple Sapphire remains one of the most chilling tales of cursed objects. It serves as a reminder that, sometimes, beauty hides a darker, more supernatural secret.
