Opened in 1829, this penitentiary introduced the concept of solitary confinement. The idea was to reform through reflection, but instead, the extreme isolation often led to madness. With such a harrowing history, is it any wonder that whispers of the paranormal now echo through its abandoned corridors?

Visitors and staff alike have reported a slew of spine-tingling experiences. Phantom footsteps in empty cell blocks, disembodied voices that seem to emanate from the walls, and shadowy figures that vanish just as quickly as they appear. Then there's the chilling tale of Al Capone. Yes, the gangster himself spent time here and, reportedly, was tormented by the spirit of James Clark, one of the victims of the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Even a man as formidable as Capone was said to have been driven to near madness by the haunting.

For those looking for a hauntingly good time, tours are available, but a word of caution: While you're exploring, you might just feel a cold hand on your shoulder, reminding you that while its inmates may be gone, their spirits linger on.
